Monday my big, pregnant belly, my three kids, and I were grocery shopping in the late morning. A couple, probably in their 60's walked by and smiled at us.
The man said, "What do you do in your spare time?!" implying that I would have no spare time.
I responded, "Look at all these kids, what do you think I do in my spare time?!" implying the kids are the fruit of my spare time.
He didn't laugh, nor did he look at me again when we met up in other aisles.
It was awkward.
When I told Travis that night he laughed really hard and told me he was embarrassed for me.

A fellow mom at church once was observing me with my 10 month old son in my lap, leaning against my pregnant belly, and someone else's smaller baby (he and my son were checking each other out, that's why I was holding him), sitting on my arm. "Look, she just can't get enough of those babies," the other mom said playfully.
I wanted to blurt, "Actually, it's not the babies I can't get enough of.." but I held back. That would have been a little bit of a foot-in-mouth moment, methinks.
I remember the grocery store comments! Especially when I had four or five along, and pregnant with my sixth, who was a laaarge baby, so in my fourth and fifth month, I already appeared ready to give birth at any moment. Sometimes the looks alone were so withering. Now I try to at least give waves and smiles to the kids and a (I hope) cheering look those moms. I can't really fathom the forwardness of some that must express their opinions about people's families. God bless you!
I love your self-depreciating humor. Is that the right word? Well, I love it.
I went to college with a guy who was 1 of 6 and he used to tell people "we didn't have cable" LOL
