cake ideas needed

In three months I'll be giving birth to our next baby.  There are lots of things to acquire over the summer:  another highchair, another car seat, another crib, an exersaucer, a name...

But what I'm most interested in at this point is finding a cake recipe for the birthday cake.

As I've mentioned before I like to have a cake baked so that it's ready to eat once I'm a little cleaned up and relaxed, and baby is napping. I then make the cake every year for the birthday party, to celebrate what I did that day - since everything else is about the Birthday Boy or Girl.

Lydia's Birthday Cake is Pineapple Upside Down Cake, sans the cherries and coconut.
Bennet's is Plum Tatin, a la Ina Garten.

I'm thinking about a Strawberry Shortcake this time around, but I'm not convinced.  Do any of you have a cake suggestion?  If you do, please leave the recipe or a link in the comments!  I'm excited to see what I get for options!

I try to do something different and more special than a plain ole chocolate cake with chocolate frosting - which is not my favorite cake but seems to be most people's suggestion.  :)

What about an angel food cake? That always sounds yummy! Or, make some sort of white cake with pudding and fruit as the filling. :)

How about this apple cinnamon cake? Never had it, but it was bookmarked in my "would like to make" recipes!

OH my, I laughed real hard when I saw this picture. Was this a real cake you were in the presence of? How wonderful. As for cake ideas...I am in love with cake, but can't make a good one to save my life. My mother makes a fantastic Texas Sheet cake that doesn't stick around the house for long. I'm not sure if this is her exact recipe, but it's pretty darn close:

Good luck! Can't wait to hear your ideas on names by the way.

I love your cake idea. Hmmm....my sister has made a good strawberry buttercream cake. Not so much of a recipe but she looked up a vanilla cake recipe and buttercream recipe. She made it two layers, with buttercream and fresh strawberries in the middle and on top. Simple and yummy!

Ha...oh my good gravy...I just gave you a recipe for chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. I am soooo observant. Here, this one might be better: (You can never go wrong with carrot cake...)

Remember those jello cakes? Where you make a white cake and then poke holes in it and pour jello over it? Well, America's Test Kitchen redid the cake with a homemade vanilla cake and REAL strawberries w/ only 2T of jello mixed in and whipped cream on top... I made it for my daughters 2nd birthday and it was SO good.

Here's a link...

PS. you have to "log in" to view the recipe... a huge pain but if your interested worth it.

PSS. I love your blog and think you're really cool! :)

Sorry-no cake ideas. I'm a chocolate lover. But I wanted to share a post with you that I'll think you like. Your compassion to those dealing with infertility is so beautiful and I think this post does a good job of describing and you and I (or anyone like us) is in the same boat. have a great day!

I just came across a cake idea on another blog. I've never had this cake before, but you can add it to your list for consideration.
